MT 199 Quaternary Ammonium Compounds

Content Handbook O

Outline of method

The amount of quaternary nitrogen is determined by potentiometric titration using an ionic surfactant electrode and sodium lauryl sulfate as titrant. From the value obtained the QAC content is calculated.

Scope

The method is suitable for the determination of quaternary ammonium compounds (QAC’s) in concentrate and ready-to-use (RTU) disinfectant formulations. The method is not suitable for products containing large amounts of alcohol (methanol, ethanol, propan-2-ol, etc.) and/or hydrochloric acid
