Outline of method

2 Free acidity.

The dimethyl sulphate is shaken with ice-cold water, and the aqueous layer is titrated with standard sodium hydroxide, using methyl
red as indicator.

3 Dimethyl sulphate

The dimethyl sulphate is refluxed with hydrochloric acid, the volume of solution is reduced to 2 to 3 ml, and water is added to the
residue. The resulting solution is titrated with standard sodium hydroxide, usingmethyl red as indicator.
